Trek - Day 1

Ready to leave and hoping for the best.

Hughie loading up.

Greetings from President Silva

Just met our kids.
Unaware of what awaits us.

"God hath not given us a spirit of fear,
but of power, and of love,
and of sound mind.
Be not therefore ashamed
of the testimony of our Lord."
2 Timothy 1: 7-8

We drove to our starting destination in a truck.
The kids piled into three buses with their gear.
We had a three-hour drive, lunch, and loaded our handcart.

Our family was first in a company of 13 handcarts.  The pioneers averaged about 8 and a half miles per day.  Our company pushed and pulled, up and down, and all around - a total of 10 miles on our first day.  Needless to say, I couldn't keep up. I sent my family on their way.  Me, I just kept plodding along - last in.

We arrived at our first campsite at dusk.  It had been a long and tiring day.  We set up camp and before our meal we ended our day with prayer.  Happily our meal had been  prepared for us.  We heartily ate soup,  homemade bread, and brownies too.  We were off to bed - not good for much else but sleep.  We even got a little rain that night.

One story I shared with our family, before we hit the trail, was of Joseph F. Smith coming home from his mission in Hawaii.  He had joined a wagon train in California.  Some ruffians entered their camp. Most of the people Joseph was traveling with hid because these hoodlums were threatening to harm anyone who was Mormon.  Joseph F. Smith walked up to one of the intruders.  The man, with pistol in hand, demanded, "Are you a Mormon?"  Joseph responded, "Yes siree; dyed in the wool; true blue, through and through."  The man grasped his hand and said, "Well you are the . . . pleasantest man I ever met!  Shake hands, young fellow.  I am glad to see a man that stands up for his convictions." (See Gospel Doctrine, 518 or Sheri L. Dew's talk, "True Blue, Through and Through," BYU-Idaho Devotional, 16 March 2004)

As a reminder of the story, I then gave everyone a blue handkerchief to use on the trail.  Throughout our trek I would periodically shout out, "What are ye?"

And they'd reply, sometimes not so enthusiastically, but they proved it every day,

"True, Blue,
Through and Through!"

Happy Pioneer Day!

Today we celebrate the Saints entering the great Salt Lake Valley 165 years ago.  Let me introduce you to some modern-day pioneers.  Hugh and I had the privilege of being Ma and Pa to eight youth on the trek. They were different ages, from different wards, and certainly had different personalities.  We didn't know each other, but we came together in the doing of the trek.  I cannot compliment them enough on their good behavior and good attitudes. Trek was better because they made it better.

May I list their virtues they so valiantly portrayed. They were obedient, kind, helpful, modest, true, considerate, loving, thoughtful, courageous, powerful, amazing, friendly, understanding, and brave.  The list could go on, but you get the point. They were incredible in so many ways!

We're Home!

We arrived home early in the evening
last Saturday from our stake youth conference:
"Arise and Shine ForthTrek 2012
As you can see, we made it.
I'll add pictures and more info over the coming days.

Ma and Pa Blair

From 1856 to 1860, ten handcart companies ventured to what is now Salt Lake City.  Eight arrived in a timely manner, but the Willie and Martin companies struggled, leaving late, and encountering sever winter weather.

Our experience is not like theirs, but our four-day trek gave us a glimpse of what they encountered.  We learned to have "faith in every footstep" and to "look to God and live."  The whole adventure was amazing, hard, and spiritual at the same time.  We made new friends and got closer to God. We were grateful to have been asked to participate.

"Let all the people of  the Church
of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,
and those who journey with them,
be organized into companies,
with a covenant and promise
to keep all the commandments
and statutes of the Lord our God.
And this shall be our covenant--
that we will walk
in all the ordinances of the Lord."

The Fourth Article of Faith

It was Sunday morning when I received a call from our ward Primary pianist.  She asked if I could fill in for her, at the piano during the last hour of Primary.  I told her I would be happy to. When I walked into the Primary room that afternoon I was uncertain of what music would be covered, but Sister Gray, the Primary music leader, briefly and quickly oriented me with an outline.  We were up and running, and together we did our parts in making music happen in Primary.

I was primed and ready to play the closing song, but there were a few extra minutes before closing. Sister Smith, from the Primary presidency, asked if anyone would like to recite an Article of Faith they had been trying to memorize at home.

Isaac, an energetic Sunbeam, happily marched up to the podium to fulfill her request.  Uninhibited, he enthusiastically spoke into the microphone. I watched and listened as Sister Smith stood at Isaac's side.  She was encouraging as he stumbled through the words and ended up prompting him with practically every word through the entire Fourth Article of Faith.  I assumed Isaac really didn't know the Article of Faith just because he was so young. Other children came to the pulpit with each selecting The Fourth Article of Faith to recite, including Isaac's twin sister, Abigail.  Surprisingly, no one else could get through it without help.

I didn't know what Article of Faith songs our Primary knew, but the thought crossed my mind that maybe we should change the closing song and sing The Fourth Article of Faith; maybe that would help everyone learn it. I quickly turned to the song in the Children's Songbook.  I looked around hoping to see Sister Gray so I could tell her about my idea.  She was no where to be found.  I realized she must be in the hallway tending to her new baby; still, I kept my songbook fixed on The Fourth Article of Faith ready to tell her of my plan.

In seconds, I had become distracted while looking around the room for Sister Gray and then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw a familiar blond head bobbing up and down approaching the podium. As I did a double take, I could clearly see it was Isaac again.  Sister Smith announced that this time Isaac would not be saying The Fourth Article of Faith, but singing it.

My eyes got wide and I straightened up at the piano.  I couldn't imagine how he would do after struggling through it earlier; but even so, I knew it was my cue.  Isaac's voice hit the microphone and I began to follow along carefully at the piano.  His voice was bright and clear. He was on key and singing every word perfectly.  As the song went on, my heart began to swell. Everyone was quiet and still in the room, hanging on every word as his young voice easily and confidently glided along each note.  We all wanted him to get it right.  I remember taking a big breath at the end of the song and pondering the special moment that had just happened. The Spirit was apparent in our little Primary and my heart was glad as I could literally feel all the pleasing smiles in the room.  We were all so inspired, happy, and impressed with Isaac. Then, another surprise; Abby, Isaac's twin sister, wanted to sing The Fourth Article of Faith too.  She was also a fearless Sunbeam. Again, I followed along at the piano.  She stood at the pulpit singing with clear voice and getting every word right.  Her song touched us all as another witness proclaiming the truths found in The Fourth Article of Faith.  Isaac and Abigail had been taught that song at home. It was an amazing experience for all of us.

We sang our regular scheduled closing song.  I didn't say anything to Sister Gray.  It was obvious why I had felt impressed to turn to The Fourth Article of Faith. When I got home I told my family about Isaac and Abby singing in Primary.  My youngest son, Sammy, now thirteen, responded, "I don't think I could say all the Articles of Faith.  I would have to sing them too."  Admittedly, I still sing The Books in the New Testament when I'm trying to locate a chapter to find a scripture.  It was one of those songs I learned from my Primary days long ago.  As always, music is a great teacher; coupled with the Spirit, understanding and testimony are strengthened.

and ordinances of the Gospel are:
first, faith in the Lord Jesus Christ;
second, Repentance;
third, Baptism by immersion

fourth, Laying on of hands
for the gift of the Holy Ghost."

P.S. - May 31, 2012 - An added note from the twins mom.  I asked, Melinda, if I could post the email she sent me.  It adds insight to what was going on in their home learning the Articles of Faith:

Sister Blair,

That is so sweet!  Thank you - it gave me chills and brought tears to my eyes.  It's been amazing teaching them.  They know the first seven.  At first it took them about three weeks to learn one, even the easier first ones.  Now it takes them about a week.  It has been a HUGE testament to me of the quickening power of the Spirit.  And I find that the songs are best for them because I can sing the first few notes and "We believe" takes on new meaning with each song, and they know exactly what one they are singing.  And the words start to repeat each other in some form in the subsequent Articles of Faith, so their minds remember and his words become their words.  It's a powerful, powerful thing!  Thanks again for sharing -- might even be something for The Friend.  Whatever you do with it, I loved it! :-)

Thanks again!

Melinda

Last Weekend

Over the Memorial Day weekend Tommy had the opportunity to baptize his friend Haley. We had a little party at our house afterwards and Sunday he confirmed her a member of the Church, giving her the gift of the Holy Ghost. It was really nice and we were glad to be a part of it.  CONGRATS HALEY!

Tom and Haley

"...As ye are desirous to come into the fold of God, and to be called his people, and are willing to bear one another’s burdens, that they may be light;

"Yea, and are willing to mourn with those that mourn; yea, and comfort those that stand in need of comfort, and to stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places that ye may be in, even until death, that ye may be redeemed of God, and be numbered with those of the first resurrection, that ye may have eternal life—

"Now I say unto you, if this be the desire of your hearts, what have you against being baptized in the name of the Lord, as a witness before him that ye have entered into a covenant with him, that ye will serve him and keep his commandments, that he may pour out his Spirit more abundantly upon you?

"And now when the people had heard these words, they clapped their hands for joy, and exclaimed: This is the desire of our hearts."

Spring Break and More

I won't bore you with all my excuses for not blogging, but it boils down to - I don't know what I'm doing. Blogger has updated and Picasa, where we download our pictures, has updated and my brain . . . well, it hasn't updated. I've been struggling with it all and still don't have it figured out.  I finally pulled some stuff together -  HAPPY SPRING!

Tommy's friend from his mission
flew in from Australia and visited us for a few days.
A concert at House of Blues was first on the agenda.
Daniel and Tommy to the left
with new friends they met at the concert.

Tom and Daniel
Right before Daniel left.

We had our share of sickness in recent weeks, but nothing tops Tommy's nightmare.  How does he get into these situations? Tom had a great camp out with some friends over spring break, but YIKES!  POISON OAK!  Thank goodness for oatmeal baths, calamine lotion, prednisone, and antibiotics.  He's still itching!
I couldn't figure out how to get this video on my blog, so check it out on my facebook. It's a fun video covering some highlights of Tommy's trip before the poison oak set in.

Tommy at the peak of his poison oak nightmare.

"If I stand here, I can see the Little Red Haired girl when she comes out of her house...Of course, if she sees me peeking around this tree, she'll think I'm the dumbest person in the world...But if I don't peek around the tree, I'll never see her...Which means I probably AM the dumbest person in the world...which explains why I'm standing in a batch of poison oak."

Words of Charlie Brown from Charles Schultz Peanuts

Janna and Bailey
made a trip to Utah over spring break.
They had a big agenda.
Part of it was going to the Salt Lake Temple.
Happily, they saw Janet.
Uncle Adam and Sally went with them too.

Janna's B-day Party at Jamba Juice

Bailey is gone and working in Florida for the summer.

Guess who surprised us?
Here from Puerto Rico . . .

Ammo and JoJo

Dexter and Cassie

And last, but not least,
Tommy and Ariel, last weekend, ready for the Prom.
Ariel will be leaving for her mission next week,
serving in Salt Lake City at Temple Square.

Hopefully I'll blog sooner instead of later as I struggle with the new, supposedly improved,  format of Blogger and Picasa.  See ya!

Unexpected Guests

"Fish and visitors smell in three days."

No smell here, we were happy to see everyone!

Wendy made a whirlwind visit.  Her grandmother wasn't doing well so she got a last minute flight out of Pensacola and was able to see her Grandma Hart before she passed away. Because of the circumstances Wendy got to see lots of other family too.  She spent one night with us.  Surprisingly, we calculated, her and Tommy hadn't seen each other in 4 1/2 years.  He took her to the airport the next day so they had a chance to visit a little more than the rest of us.

Also,  spring break came early in Arizona.  Bill, Chelsea, and the girls came to town and spent a few days, then it was to Disneyland and back to Arizona.  It's always great to see the grandkids.  They grow so quickly.

Here's another princess,
Dani, 6 months now.

During part of their stay Bill, Tom, and Ariel went on a hike. Add water and you'll find some scary cliff jumping.  They had a great time.

Before Billy left my brother, Mark, JoLinda, and Scotty came by. They were an overnight stop on their way to Disneyland. Everyone got to see each other at dinner, then Bill and his bunch headed out to rendezvous with other family in Brea.  The families (Bill's and Mark's) were all meeting up with other extended family at Disneyland the next day. Tom, Ariel, and Becky decided to join in.  They had a great time, but unfortunately - not many photos.

Your Day for a Mission

Tommy's girlfriend, Ariel, has been called on a mission. We're so excited for her.  She'll be entering the MTC (Missionary Training Center) May 9th. Amazingly, she's going to the same mission my niece is serving in - Utah Salt Lake City Temple Square. Who knows, maybe they'll even get to be companions.

And Sister Reynders is now on Temple Square.  In her last letter she shared her testimony.  She is so excited and happy to be serving.  I'm so proud of her. Look for her picture on my sidebar.  Give it a click to check out her blog.

Being that I've mentioned these two young women and their missions, I wanted to post this little video of Elder Neil L. Andersen telling about Syd Going (rugby superstar) and his missionary experience.  I love it!

Happy Anniversary???

It's my anniversary - 36 years Hugh and I.  Make it 42 including all the dating years.  But I'm sick today and have been since Thursday night.  It's been a bummer long weekend.  We went out to lunch Friday trying to revive me.  Happily Hughie taught my Sunday School lesson today and thankfully others intervened for my other Sunday commitments.  So what am I doing?  Sitting around in my pajamas blogging.  Here's hoping for a better week of health and more years of happiness with my husband.

"One comes to realize very soon after marriage that the spouse has weaknesses not previously revealed or discovered. The virtues which were constantly magnified during courtship now grow relatively smaller, and the weaknesses which seemed so small and insignificant during courtship now grow to sizable proportions. The hour has come for understanding hearts, for self-appraisal, and for good common sense, reasoning, and planning."

Spencer W. Kimball
"Oneness in Marriage"
Adapted from a BYU Devotional Address
September 7, 1976
Liahona, October 2002

Check out the date on this quote - 1976.  Hugh and I had been married a little over six months. I was working full-time at BYU in the Transfer Office as a computer operator. I couldn't attend the devotionals, but they would always pipe them in for us to hear.

Hugh was enrolled for Fall semester and starting up at BYU again. He had to drop out over the Spring/Summer term because he had injured his knee playing softball with the ward team just six weeks after we moved to Provo. With surgery and physical therapy, he was literally just getting back on his feet. It had been a reflective time for him and he decided to change his major from Speech Therapy to Geography during his convalescence.

At this time, Hugh was also working early morning janitorial at BYU's Movie Studios during the week and on Sunday's he cranked up the heat in one of the buildings on campus. Interestingly, his BYU job has been the only job where Hugh had to work on Sunday. Of course, the reason he was readying the building was so students could attend church.

We were both 23-years old and newly married, now, 36 years later - AMAZING!

More of 2011

For some reason I never posted this collection of pictures I assembled last December.  I think I was in search of more pictures to add to it.  I obviously forgot about it, but here it is, late, and with some food for thought.  Look at the date on that quote!  I was Janna's age going to AVC just like she is now.

"We need not feel that we must be without fault in order to receive the blessings of God. He will take us from where we now stand if we will come to him. He will build us up, spiritually, and he will build us up with confidence in ourselves."

I was reviewing our pictures and I have tons of undocumented stuff that happened in 2011. Anyway, I just thought I'd post some photos that I hadn't used earlier to wrap up the year.

I don't make a habit of taking pictures of our local missionaries, but I wanted to get one specifically of Elder McMullin because he has my mother's maiden name.  When I meet a McMullin I just gravitate and figure we're related.  There are McMullins in the world, but not all with the M-c-M-u-l-l-i-n spelling.

I paid of visit to my cousin Cassie in September.
I got to see her new house and her family,
and I got lucky and saw her oldest daughter, Perri,
who was also visiting.

Sam, waterlogged in Cassie's pool,
but happy to be on a bit of a vacation.
We spent the summer watching Poppy

We were happy to spend some time
visiting family in Clovis, CA.

Janna would like to claim Dani is her clone,
"Why didn't they name her Janna Nell?"
